King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Through the royal sponsorship of His Majesty King Fahd bin Abdulaziz, and the generous support of sister hospital in Riyadh, King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre-Jeddah opened in April 2000.

By June 2002, KFSH&RC-Jeddah expanded its capacity to 235 beds and continued its record of significant achievements, demonstrated by the first lung and bone marrow transplantation surgeries. Focusing on the operative and administrative goals of the Hospital, this period also saw accreditation achieved from both Saudi Aramco and JCIA. At the time, KFSH&RC-Jeddah was one of only three hospitals in the Middle East to be recognized by JCIA in this manner; a truly remarkable feat, given the comparatively short time the Hospital had been in existence.

KFSH&RC-Jeddah continues in its forward thinking and progressive outlook. Over the last three years innovative steps have been taken resulting in the establishment of four centers of excellence; Oncology, Cardiovascular, Neurosciences and Intensive Care Units. The Hospital has been an active participant in e-Health activities and is a strong supporter of the International eHealth Association.

The hospital has gone through various developmental stages. By the end of 2004, the Institutional Review Board (IRB) had approved sixty research proposals, some of which were international clinical trials sponsored by leading pharmaceutical companies. In addition, the Research Center successfully initiated collaborative projects in medical and drug development research with organizations from the United States, China, and Germany. This success can be partially attributed to the scientific-consultative support of Jeddah BioCity, a biotechnology company, 40% owned by King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre-Jeddah.
